Gallery: Soaking it up Spa-Style

This Master Bathroom is in the same home as the kitchen we showed in our last Gallery. From the walk in steam shower and drop in tub and deck to the 8’-0” long vanity you notice the feeling of complete serenity; a Spa-Style room in the home.

The full glass walls used for the walk in shower give a great illusion of space and the solid slab marble tub deck is a great touch. Marble throughout the floor and walls with art glass accents offer a consistent back drop giving it a dramatic atmosphere and contrast nicely with our Paradigm Kitchen Design cabinetry.

Paradigm Kitchen Design was the cabinet company of choice throughout this new residence in the McKenzie Heights neighborhood in Vancouver.

The large center island is great for entertaining guests.  It includes plenty of counter space for planning meals, lots of storage, a wine fridge and seating for 3. It contrasts nicely with the white painted finish of the cabinetry on 3 sides.

Custom panelled appliances and a more furniture styled pantry area integrate this space nicely with the adjacent Family Room. The appliance garage right of the sink allows for a neat and tidy storage solution rather than having those items filling up counter space. Neatly tucked in behind you may notice the Wok Kitchen which complements the Main Kitchen beautifully.

This home in sunny Tsawwassen went through an amazing transformation during this remodel.

By changing the cabinetry from outdated wood to a clean and sleek slab door with a painted lacquer finish, the room achieves a feeling of openness.  Overall counter space has been increased with the addition of a peninsula eating area which doubles nicely as additional workspace conveniently located in the middle of the kitchen.  There is no shortage of storage thanks to pantries that flank the eating area and upper cabinets that extend to the ceiling.

Other areas of interest include: a  full height aluminium tambour that efficiently organizes the corner, floating open shelves around the television and display storage at the end of the peninsula and a large modern sink with an integral drain tray.

And now, for the curious amongst you, we're pleased(?) to share with you the BEFORE shots which will truly emphasize the significance of the changes made to this kitchen.

The palate for this kitchen was chosen for its calming nature; the soft blues of the glass playing against the warmth of the laminate (yes, LAMINATE) doors. The countertops are Cambria Quartz surfacing (Torquay) and the flooring is Forbo Marmoleum.

This remodel has taken in the original kitchen and an old, under-utilized bathroom.  The new room is so spacious we were able to eliminate wall cabinetry on two walls and still have plenty of storage space for the clients.  Two pantries are accessorized with roll-out shelves and a full height pantry pull-out to make the amble storage as useful as possible. And by putting all the tall elements in this kitchen onto one wall, the amount of continuous counter space is every cook's dream.

This beautiful heritage home in Vancouver turns 100 years old this year and what better way to celebrate a century than with a new kitchen by Paradigm Kitchen Design.

It was important to strike a balance between honouring the architecture and style of a home built in 1912, while adding some contemporary flavour and modern technology. To this end, materials included quarter sawn white oak and painted enamel finishes, custom stained glass panels reminiscent of Charles Rennie Macintosh , and hand-made brass handles. A Scottish Rose motif can be seen in the wood inserts and stained glass.

If you'd like to see stunning home in person, it will be featured on the Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s 2012 Heritage House Tour. More information can be found HERE.

This project is one of the most extensive remodels we've undertaken.  The ground floor suite was completely gutted and reconfigured, taking 3 rooms and turning them into one open living space.  The kitchen was transformed from a tiny box into a chef's dream.  Cabinetry throughout the kitchen is engineered veneer and the countertops are Caesarstone quartz.

Even the foyer was remodelled, taking 3 poorly configured closets and creating a large concealed space for laundry and linen storage, as well as convenient coat and shoe storage at the entrance.  The tile floors in the foyer protect this more heavily used space, while the engineered flooring in the rest of the suite make for a more warm and inviting living space.

More details on the complete remodel can be found HERE.

A very dramatic transformation from the original layout (seen in the last photo) was achieved by opening up the walls between the kitchen, family and dining room.  The result is a space designed for entertaining.  The large 10' long island defines the actual "kitchen" area and provides seating for up to 6 people.  Finishes are very contemporary; the upper cabinetry features high-gloss painted doors (handle-less for a clean appearance) which contrasts nicely with a horizontal grain laminate for the base and pantry cabinets.  Countertops are quartz in two different colours.

This project in North Vancouver is a great example of what happens when the client has a plan before they come to see their kitchen designer.  Before a single line was drawn the client knew the appliances they would be using, the colours they wanted to use, and a general idea as to where things should be located.  We made very few changes to their original ideas, only tweaking them slightly to achieve a nicer visual balance, and to ensure the accessories we installed worked properly.

The cabinetry is a simple shaker style, painted in Benjamin Moore "Ranchwood" and the quartz countertops are Cambria "Aragon".  We think you'll agree this kitchen makes it very easy to enjoy a green lifestyle.

This breathtaking kitchen shows you can create a warm and inviting space using mostly white.  Painted white cabinetry, quartz countertops and bullet marble backsplash tile, set against hardwood flooring provides just the right amount of contrast.  Also note how both the cabinet and countertop materials change from the perimeter cabinetry to the island.

Most of the appliances are fully integrated (hidden behind door panels) which really allows the cabinetry to take centre stage.  Cabinetry running to the ceiling could have been overwhelming, but by splitting the upper doors with a glass panel the visual weight of the cabinetry is lessened, and our eyes are drawn away for the over height ceilings.

Home Grown Quality

One of the most important ways that Paradigm Kitchen Design has contributed to reducing it's carbon footprint has not been in material or finish choices.  Although material choices are important, we feel the biggest impact we have on our carbon footprint is the fact that we build all our cabinets right here in Vancouver, BC.

We opened our own manufacturing facility in 2005 in order to allow the designers at Paradigm to tailor cabinetry to precisely meet the demands of each project, something virtually impossible with a stock line of cabinets. In addition, technical needs for specialty appliances, hardware and fixtures can be anticipated and incorporated into the project from the outset. The result is a project that is completed with greater satisfaction, reduced complications.

Building their own cabinetry also affords Paradigm the luxury of having a range of designs as varied as the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. Whether it’s a chic lofts in Yaletown with a contemporary, or even industrial contemporary design, or a bungalow in Kerrisdale that would lend itself to a more classic or mid-century styles, Paradigm has the cabinets to fit.

Today’s customer is more design-savvy and product-educated than ever before. Thanks to the internet and home renovation television they have a clear vision for their project long before it begins. The designers at Paradigm are experienced in taking that vision from concept to completion; from creating plans and specifying materials to supplying the trades to undertake room renovations. The established channels of communication between members of our skilled team contribute to positive results and timely completion.

WIP - Ridge Meadows Reno Part 5

Monday was an exciting day at our Ridge Meadows household.  For the home-owners, cabinet delivery day is almost always the highlight to this point of the reno.  After all the earlier mess the arrival of the cabinets is the light on the horizon.  The room is getting put back together and the plans we worked on all those weeks ago is about to become a reality.

For the designer, this is where the anxieties begin.  Did we measure everything correctly? Will the cabinets and appliances fit?  Is all the electrical and plumbing  where it needs to be?  It's not that we expect a disaster.  Far from it.  But accidents do happen from time to time, and this is typically where we discover them.  But for this reno, everything is going together nicely.
A nice shot from the living room.  You can see the opening for the fridge and microwave on the back wall.  The sink will be located beneath the window on the right (with a nice view of the mountains and the dike along the Pitt River) and the island in the middle of the room will be covered across the back with panels that will match the rest of the cabinetry.

The working side of the island showing the opening for the 48" pro-style range.  The skinny cabinet to the right of the opening is a pull-out that will hold oils and spices conveniently near the cooking area.  Pot and pan drawers are right of that.  Also, note the door panelling on the end of the island.  The tall unit that will act as a support for the raised eating bar also opens up revealing some hidden storage.

Another picture showing the inside of the kitchen.  The 3 cabinets to the right of the fridge opening are each pot and pan drawers.  Further in is a recycling centre and a food waste centre located right beside the large sink.

The installation to this point took approximately 2 days, and we expect there to be another day and a half to finish up.  The countertop manufacturer will be templating on Friday.  The next instalment on this blog will appear once the tops are in ... in about 10 days time.
